Design
The Planar lens design is the most successful camera lens concept - also the most copied of all time. It gives the optics computer numerous possibilities to correct all aberrations extraordinarily extensively. And its imaging performance is very consistent over a wide range of magnifications, the key requirement for universal macro lenses like the ZEISS Makro-Planar lens.
Apochromat
As an apochromat, the chromatic aberrations (longitudinal chromatic aberrations) in the lens are corrected by lenses made of special glass with anomalous partial dispersion. The chromatic aberrations are therefore well below defined limits. Light-dark transitions in the image and especially highlights are reproduced largely free of colored artifacts.
Highest image contrast
Aberrations are particularly noticeable in night shots with large differences in brightness. Thanks to the excellently corrected lateral chromatic aberration, the luminous facade is reproduced absolutely perfectly.
No color fringes
Light sources that lie in front of or behind the focus distance are a special challenge for any lens. With the ZEISS Otus, the lateral chromatic aberration is so low that virtually no color fringing occurs.

Aspherical design
The aspherical lens design ensures consistent imaging performance across the entire focus range as well as display sharpness at the image periphery. The more complex surface profile of the aspherical lens can reduce or even prevent spherical aberration and reduce other optical aberrations compared to a simple lens.
