Shutter speeds up to 1/32000 seconds

Electronic shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 sec. far surpass mechanical shutter speeds for a new image expression. In bright light, shallow depth of field is achieved without ND filter.

No distracting noise

The electronic anti-distortion shutter ensures silent shooting, so there are no mechanical mirrors or shutters to disturb concentration, such as at a sporting event.

Anti-flicker system

The camera detects flicker from fluorescent lights and other artificial lighting and triggers to prevent exposure and color anomalies (at fast shutter speeds) and inconsistencies in continuous shooting.

10 frames/s with mechanical shutter

With the mechanical shutter, continuous shooting at up to 10 fps is now possible ? even with flash even with flash. High-speed continuous shooting can be performed as needed.

4D FOCUS: wide autofocus range

With 693 AF phase detection points and 425 AF contrast detection points, the sensor provides extensive AF coverage of 93% of the image area.

The ?9 II's optimized responsive hybrid AF captures subjects with great accuracy even in difficult lighting conditions.

4D FOCUS: continuous tracking

Continuous AF and an optimized AF algorithm significantly improve AF accuracy and tracking. Even when the shutter button is pressed, the continuously activated AF tracks random subject movements seamlessly.

Speed meets artificial intelligence

With real-time tracking and AF with real-time eye detection, you'll track your subjects quickly, accurately, and intelligently. Artificial intelligence-based algorithms are used and large amounts of data are processed in real time.

AI-based real-time tracking

Once the subject is selected, focus is precisely maintained with the shutter button half-pressed. Position changes are tracked accurately, giving you the flexibility to compose the image in search of the best shot.

Instant focus on the eye

Real-time AF with Eye Detection maintains focus on the subject's eyes even when another object passes the area in front of the subject when the shutter button is pressed halfway or the AF ON or custom button is pressed. 

Prioritizing the right/left eye as needed

You can now use a custom button to specify an eye of your choice to track even before or while shooting. This allows you to better focus on image composition, light, and other details.

AF with eye detection for animals

The fast and accurate automatic detection and tracking of human and animal eyes provides a greatly improved success rate when shooting animals in nature or at home.

Reliable even in low light

State-of-the-art AF algorithms enable high AF precision in difficult lighting conditions up to EV-3. Focus Priority option under Aperture Control is used for more accurate focusing in low light or smaller aperture values.

Easy-to-use focus frame

The focus area can now be moved to any position using multi-selection, even when the shutter button is half-pressed. Depending on the subject, you can set a red or white focus frame.

The 3.68 million-dot electronic viewfinder displays images in detail. The frame rate of 120 fps ensures a smooth viewfinder image. The fluorine coating on the outside of the lens repels dirt and is easy to clean.

Built-in 5-axis optical image stabilization

Built-in 5-axis optical image stabilization provides a shutter speed advantage of 5.5 steps. Live View image stabilization facilitates framing selection for motion pictures.

Blur reduction

Sony has redesigned the shutter assembly with damped screws that absorb shutter movement. An optimized image stabilization algorithm reduces camera shake. In addition, the shutter is now quieter.

Aesthetic 4K video

With full pixel readout without pixel binning, 2.4 times more data than needed for 4K can be processed (equivalent to the amount of data for 6K) to achieve 3840 x 2160 resolution and thus aesthetic 4K videos ? in addition to versatile use with fast hybrid autofocus, AF with eye detection, touch tracking, etc.

AF with real-time eye detection for videos

AF with real-time eye detection now detects the subject's eyes even when shooting video. Because the a9 II precisely keeps the eye in focus and continuously tracks it, there is more time to compose the image.

Touch tracking for consistent focus

For video with the a9 II, tap your subject on the LCD to automatically focus and track via touch tracking. Additionally, if a human eye is detected, AF with real-time eye detection is activated.

Compatible with new Multi Interface Microphone

A digital audio interface has been added to the Multi Interface (MI) accessory shoe. Use the new ECM-B1M shotgun microphone for high-quality audio with low quality loss.

High-speed 1000BASE-T transmission available

Smooth, reliable, and highly secure high-speed data transfer of large image files to an FTP server is now possible via a LAN port supporting 1000BASE-T FTPS (File Transfer Protocol over SSL/TLS).

Support for FTP background data transfer

During and after shooting with the ?9 II, JPEG and RAW files can be transferred in the background via FTPso professionals can deliver quickly. Up to nine FTP servers can be assigned in advance.

Voice memos for images

With the new voice memos lets you describe image content or shooting conditions for up to 60 seconds and attach them to images as WAV files. IPTC and camera serial number data can also be embedded in image files.

Remote control via Remote Camera Tool

Using the Remote Camera Tool Desktop application, you can control the camera remotely. This is handy when direct access is not possible, for example when shooting from a bird's eye view in a stadium.

Provision of Wi-Fi® at 5 GHz

In addition to the 2.4 GHz band, Wi-Fi® high-speed transmission is now also possible via a 5 GHz band (WLAN IEEE 802.11ac). For recordings without annoying cables, you can also make wireless remote recordings via a PC.

Even faster PC remote control via USB cable connection

The new USB Type-CTM connector and an optimized PC remote control algorithm significantly increase the data transfer rate. Even uncompressed large RAW images can be transferred quickly without interrupting workflow.

Easy operation in portrait mode

The new VG-C4EM has been optimized in terms of the position, shape and material of the controls, as in the case of the camera body, so it fits in the hand as usual even in portrait mode.

Shooting sessions in profile length

The a9 II is equipped with a high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery. Alternatively, using the optional VG-C4EM vertical grip, two of these batteries can provide longer operating time for worry-free shooting on the go.

Two media slots with UHS-II support

Data is stored quickly via the two media slots compatible with UHS-I and UHS-II. Simultaneous or relay shooting, separate RAW/JPEG and photos/videos, copy data from one card to the other ? no problem with the a9 II.

Save and load settings

This new function saves and reads camera settings via SD card ? for convenient use on other a9 II cameras. In the FTP transfer functions, you can save and load your FTP settings using the corresponding function.

Efficient image selection

You can directly rate or protect images as you view them, as well as view larger photo collections in groups of 10 or 100 shots and continuous shooting in groups.

Improved menu interface

Custom button settings are displayed on the menu screen for easier operation. In addition, the front dial or Fn button lets you switch between menu tabs with one hand.

Imaging Edge? Remote, Viewer, and Edit for Desktop

Enhance photos with Imaging Edge desktop applications. Use Remote to control shooting live on your PC screen, Viewer to view, rate, and select photos from large image libraries, and Edit to transform RAW data into high-quality photos.
