The specially developed control algorithm enables positioning of a large focus group with minimal delay and vibration.

New XA element for outstanding resolution and bokeh

The optical design meets G Master requirements and consists of 3 fluorite elements to prevent aberrations that can occur with telephoto lenses. A large XA element prevents onion rings in the bokeh. The individually calibrated lenses provide a perfect balance between resolution and bokeh. Optional 1.4x and 2x high-performance teleconverters are available with XA elements are available.

Weighing only 3040 grams (including tripod mount), the lens is perfect for compact, lightweight E-mount cameras and offers easy handling. Smooth, precise panning shots succeed handheld and with monopod.

Reliability and durability for tough conditions

The dustproof and splashproof design provides the reliability needed in challenging outdoor conditions. Fluorine coating on the front lens element repels water, oil and other contaminants. Magnesium alloy is used on the outer lens barrel, tripod mount, and critical areas in the barrel to increase resilience.

Powerful features for professional needs

When FULL TIME DMF is enabled, manual focus is used automatically when the focus ring is used, even in AF-C mode. MODE 2 of optical SteadyShot image stabilization enables panning shots. MODE 3 is suitable for dynamic sports or nature shots and makes subject capture easier with the more stable viewfinder image.

A new control algorithm contributes to fast, smooth positioning of a large focus group with minimal delay and vibration.

Large XA element improves image quality

The G Master optical precision design provides extremely high contrast all the way to the edges of the image. The newly developed large XA element (extreme aspherical) and three fluorite elements eliminate aberrations that can occur with telephoto lenses. This results in impressive resolution and detail throughout the image area.

Beautiful G Master bokeh

In addition to the new XA element with a large aperture and extremely high surface precision, individually calibrated lenses control spherical aberration, providing a perfect balance between resolution and the beautiful bokeh familiar from G Master. A circular aperture with 11 blades further embellishes the smooth bokeh.

Extra-long reach with 1.4x/2.0x teleconverter²

Optional high-performance 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters are available. The 2.0x teleconverter extends the focal length of the lens to 1200 mm (1800 mm on an APS-C body) with a maximum aperture of F8, while maintaining excellent optical quality and autofocus speed and precision.

Outstanding clarity due to fewer reflections

Sony's original nanocoating, flocking of key internal surfaces, and other design refinements minimize internal reflections, so there's little ghosting or light effects that could diminish image clarity. Light weight and optimal weight distribution for easy shooting

With the light weight of only 3040 grams and optimal weight distribution, the technology of the SEL400F28GM provided the blueprint. This allows the outstanding optical performance to be fully utilized even when shooting handheld or with a monopod. In the compact and lightweight E-mount body, the center of gravity is ideally placed for precise, blur-free panning shots.

Sturdy magnesium alloy cylinder components

The magnesium alloy on the outside of the lens barrel, tripod mount, and major internal components offers two benefits when shooting in extreme environments and situations: it's tough and lightweight.

Additional mounting screws have been added to the mount and other optimizations have been made to ensure maximum stability and reliability for professional use.

Fluorine coating on the front element

The front lens element features a fluorine coating that protects against water, oil, and other contaminants while making it easy to wipe clean if dirt or fingerprints do stick to the surface.

Lightweight carbon fiber lens hood

The flocked interior of this lightweight, durable carbon fiber hood helps prevent unwanted light from entering the lens, which could affect image quality.

Optical SteadyShot with 3 modes

Optical image stabilization facilitates handheld shooting of sharp images at super-tele focal lengths. MODE 2 enables panning shots. MODE 3 is suitable for dynamic sports or nature shots and facilitates subject capture with the more stable viewfinder image. 5-axis image stabilization is available with compatible ? Series is available.

Full Time DMF

When the FULL TIME DMF switch is ON, manual focusing is automatically activated by rotating the focus ring, even when shooting in AF-C mode. This function can be used to correct the focus, for example, when the autofocus is on the wrong subject. In addition, this allows the focus to be precisely adjusted after the original autofocus setting when the AF function of the shutter release button (press halfway down) has been disabled.

Hard-shell design bag

The specially designed hard-shell case protects the lens from bumps and shocks during transportation.

Slide-in filter shaft

The filter slot fits standard 40.5 mm ND filters, other types of filters, and the VF-DCPL1 circular polarizing filter. The VF-DCPL1 circular polarizing filter can be rotated for desired polarization when inserted in the lens.

Stable, versatile tripod mount

The tripod mount of the lens is equipped with ball bearings. This provides stability while allowing for easy rotation. There are also 90° click stops that can be turned on or off depending on your preference: ON allows for secure, quick 90° positioning, OFF means less resistance and better rotatability.
