Zoom lens for the APS-C format with large F1.8 aperture over the entire focal length range.

The SIGMA 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art zoom lens in the medium telephoto range with large F1.8 aperture over the entire focal length range impresses with the image quality of a fixed focal length lens.

We took on the task of developing a zoom lens that offers the speed and resolution of a fixed focal length lens. In other words, the highest level of optical performance and expressiveness. We achieved our first success with the SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art. This lens not only met our high standards for the Art product line, but was also the world's first APS-C zoom lens with a constant F1.8 aperture over the entire focal length range.

We continued to build on this concept and now present the SIGMA 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art, a mid-range telephoto zoom lens with a large diameter. This new lens offers more speed than an F2.8 telephoto lens and, due to its zoom functionality, covers the focal lengths of three classic fixed focal lengths: 85mm F1.8, 105mm F1.8 and 135mm F1.8 (35mm-equivalent focal length ranges). The lens sets new standards for zoom lens image quality and is ideal for portraits due to its fine bokeh.

Longitudinal chromatic aberration and lateral chromatic aberration are largely eliminated by the optimal arrangement of three FLD ("F" low dispersion) glass elements, one SLD (special low dispersion) glass element, three SLD glass elements with a high refractive index, and other special glass elements that act on chromatic dispersion. By integrating at least one low-dispersion element in each element group, this lens can achieve excellent image quality over the entire focal length range.

    * FLD glass is an extremely low dispersion glass that enables excellent image quality. The refractive index and dispersion of this highly transparent glass are significantly lower than conventional types of glass. In its properties, it is very similar to fluoride glass, which is very popular due to its unusually abnormal dispersion. These properties minimize residual chromatic aberration (secondary spectrum) that cannot be corrected by ordinary glass and guarantee very sharp and high-contrast images.

    Reflection and ghosting eliminating design

In designing the lens, we placed great emphasis from the outset on studying susceptibility to reflections and ghosting to achieve an optical design that is resistant to even strong backlighting.

    Redesigned Hyper Sonic Motor

To enable outstanding image quality and an open aperture of F1.8, the Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) has been enhanced. We optimized the layout and shape of each component so that the HSM is now 30% smaller. The slimmer format of the HSM is an important prerequisite for developing a zoom lens that combines F1.8 aperture with high image quality.

Aperture unit designed for smooth operation

In SIGMA's lens product line, only the SIGMA 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG lens has a larger aperture diameter. This large diameter requires a smooth yet fast operating mechanism that surpasses anything previously available. This wasachievedby using a carbon fiber coating on the blades and a polycarbonate made of fluorine for the aperture unit. These innovations provide exceptionally smooth iris operation even in continuous shooting mode, and the new polycarbonate is extremely durable and wear-resistant.

    Internal focusing and zoom

Since its market launch, the SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art has also been widely used for video shooting. We assume that now the SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art will often be used together with the new SIGMA 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art. That's why we made sure that no significant differences are noticeable between the two lenses, neither in operation nor in zooming and focusing. SIGMA's internal focusing and internal zooming technologies ensure that the build length of the lens does not change when focusing or zooming, and even turning the zoom ring has no effect on focusing.

Tripod clamp allows stable and convenient operation

The compact tripod clamp allows convenient and stable hands-free shooting. Electroless nickel-plated parts ensure the quality and durability of the 90-degree click stops and allow smooth switching between the horizontal and vertical positions. The shape of the clamp also makes it easier to handle and transport the lens when it is not attached to the camera.

    High-quality design features

To ensure precise operation, the internal parts are made of metal or Thermally Stable Composite (TSC)*, which combines very well with metals. The lens barrel is engraved with the year of release to provide instant access to this information.

    * TSC exhibits thermal expansion similar to that of aluminum. Components made of TSC are very dimensionally stable, allowing for extremely precise lens construction. Compared to commonly used polycarbonate with 20% glass content, TSC offers about 70% higher elasticity. And compared to polycarbonate with 30% glass content, it offers 25% higher elasticity. (The comparison refers to components produced by SIGMA)
