24.2 Megapixel APS-C Sensor with Original Shake Reduction System

At the heart of the Ricoh GR III is the 23.5 x 15.6 mm APS-C format CMOS sensor, designed without a low-pass filter to increase resolution. At the same time, it is responsible for a high tonal range and delivers RAW images in the universal DNG format with a color depth of 14 bits. In cooperation with the new processor, the "GR Engine 6", and an accelerator unit, the GR III offers fast image processing and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 102400. With this value, the camera underlines its suitability as the ultimate ? "point and shoot" camera and enables unique photos under "available light?" conditions. In addition to the high sensitivity, low-light photography is supported by the original Pentax 3-axis Shake Reduction. As already proven in Pentax SLR cameras, here a movable sensor is integrated in the ultra-compact camera body and gives an exposure reliability of up to 4 exposure stops. At the same time, the Shake Reduction has a low-pass filter simulation. For special motifs, the two-stage ?AA filter simulator? uses micro-oscillations to provide the necessary blur to avoid images with the unwelcome moiré effect. The sensor cleaning function also uses these micro-vibrations to remove dust deposits from the sensor.

For the new lens of the GR III, the extremely narrow design had to be reconciled with exceptional imaging performance. The 18.3 mm lens (28 mm KB equivalent), with a peak aperture of F/2.8 and its construction of six elements in four groups, ensures perfect image quality. Using high refractive index low dispersion glass elements, it delivers the clearest and sharpest images in the history of the GR series, while minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration. In addition, backlight flare and ghosting are minimized to deliver high-contrast, high-resolution images across a wide range of subjects under varying photographic conditions. A digital crop function for 35 mm (at 15 MP resolution) and 50 mm (at 7 MP) (focal length specifications equivalent to KB format), expand image composition possibilities as does the option for a 1:1 aspect ratio (standard 3:2). A completely new feature in the GR III is the macro function, which delivers excellent close-up image results at an image scale of just under 1:3 and a focusing range of between 6 and 12 centimeters. Nine aperture blades provide natural bokeh with a strong sense of depth.

Fast focus response and shutter release

A snapshot camera like the GR III in particular needs to be fast. The best motifs are spontaneous. Thus, when the camera is turned on, hardly a second passes before it is ready to shoot. For focusing, the GR III uses Hybrid AF, a combination of contrast and phase detection autofocus. This not only achieves maximum speed during focusing, but also high precision. The very short shutter lag of just 0.8 seconds, in turn, ensures that even subjects that don't hold still for long are captured perfectly. A frame rate of 4 frames/second offers enough power to possibly capture the image even better with the decisive reshoot.

High-resolution 3-inch LCD monitor with intuitive touchscreen operation

The 3-inch HD LCD monitor with approximately 1,037,000 pixels plays an important role in controlling and monitoring the camera and the shots. For the first time in GR history, this supports intuitive camera control through touchscreen operation on the touch-sensitive camera monitor. Functions such as focus area selection (also in combination with direct release), menu control or image playback are supported.

A special monitor design ensures good readability. With the proven "Air Gapless" construction, reflections and light scattering are minimized through the use of a special resin, ensuring very good recognition of the monitor image even in direct sunlight. If that's not enough, the monitor's brightness can be adjusted individually. The monitor surface is made of a specially hardened glass and thus prevents damage, for example from scratches.

Intuitive camera control with many functions

As soon as the photographer picks up the camera, he feels familiar with its operation. The tried-and-tested ergonomics of the switches and buttons support handling and give a very "analog" impression. The most important functions are within easy reach of the index finger and thumb, allowing direct and quick operation with one hand. Buttons can also be programmed individually to have preferred functions immediately available. In addition to the usual exposure programs, up to three presets with user defaults can be called up on the dial.

    Extensive image composition options

Another basic principle of the Ricoh GR III is that image composition can be done in-camera and without the need for additional tools. The "Image Control" function, for example, offers the option of preselecting different film looks. Here, the effect of different film types can be simulated, as in analog photography. For example, the photographer can choose between different color and black-and-white presets or reversal film, the optimal preset for the image composition.

A total of 10 presets and 2 freely configurable presets are available. Here, for example, saturation, hue, graininess or contrast can be specified individually. And with raw development directly in the camera, all options for image design remain open.

    Functions for wireless shooting control

Just like a professional SLR camera, the GR III offers many shooting control options. In addition to single frames, continuous shooting at up to 4 frames/second can also be captured. In addition, the GR III also offers multiple exposure, interval shooting or bracketing, providing further options for creative image composition. Another special feature is the remote control of the camera via app. From camera settings to shutter release and image transfer, the "Image Sync App" offers many functions of wireless camera control
Wireless communication between the camera and smartphone takes place via Bluetooth for controlling camera functions and via Wi-Fi/WLAN for transferring images. The Bluetooth function also provides a connection in idle mode, for example to quickly synchronize GPS location data with the images via smartphone.

    Video function in Full HD

The Ricoh GR III records Full HD videos in MPEG 4 format. Besides the common frequencies of 24 and 30 frames/second, videos can also be recorded at 60 frames/second to create slow motion or a sharper image impression.

    Magnesium/aluminum alloy housing

The features mentioned here and many more details require a lot of space. Despite the metal chassis, integrated Sensor Shift Shake Reduction, 3-inch touchscreen and communication technology, to name just a few, the engineers have managed to design a particularly small and compact camera. At the same time, stability, at a weight of just 257 g, has been ensured by using a magnesium/aluminum alloy for the camera body. Thus, another important point of the product philosophy was realized.
