    Faster than fast. Speed redefined

There are moments that never repeat themselves. They're over in a split second and never come back. With the EOS-1D X Mark III, you can capture them at up to 20 fps.

Many exciting moments are gone in a split second: a sprinter at the finish line or an osprey catching its prey at the water's surface. In such moments, you simply can't make a mistake. A fraction of a second too early or too late and you've missed the moment, and usually it never comes back. For these reasons we have developed the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III.

Continuous shooting at up to 20 fps

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III can shoot up to twenty 20.1-megapixel full-frame images per second in Live View mode. This uses either the mechanical shutter or an electronic shutter that allows for extremely quiet shooting.

When working with the camera's optical viewfinder, up to 16 frames per second are possible an extraordinary feat for a DSLR camera that could only be achieved through Canon's vast experience in the field of mechanics. The drive motors that move the mirror up and down are so precisely tuned that the mirror returns to its original position with virtually no mirror bounce.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III's shutter is rated at approximately 500,000 shutter releases. That's a whole new level of speed and reliability, giving professionals peace of mind even in stressful situations.

    See in real time

With the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III's premium optical viewfinder, you'll see what's happening in front of the camera without any delay. This real-time view lets you react faster and capture the moment that others who use an electronic viewfinder, no matter how fast, miss.

    The power of DIGIC X

At the heart of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is a single DIGIC X image processor. This processor is significantly more powerful than previous DIGIC processors and enables the incredible speed of the LIGER. In addition to providing excellent image quality in virtually any shooting condition, DIGIC X also enables continuous shooting at up to 20 frames per second with full AF/AE and in-camera DLO processing.

    Intelligent AF that truly impresses

Capture crisp and sharp images. Deep-learning AF algorithms detect a wide variety of situations and even track faces hidden behind eyeglass lenses or helmet visors.

Whether you're working with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III's sensational optical viewfinder or the 7.62cm touchscreen LCD, you can't help but notice the tremendous speed and precision of the revolutionary AF system. Deep-learning algorithms have been programmed to recognize different sports. And the face and eye detection has been optimized to work with glasses and helmet wearers.

No matter how fast the action, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is faster at adjusting focus so you take the perfect picture.

Dedicated image sensor and processor for focusing

With the introduction of the EOS 650 in 1987, we revolutionized the SLR market with the CMOS AF line sensor. It was so powerful that it's still used in DSLRs today, and Canon's EOS-1D X Mark III takes it a step further with its new technology.

When you use the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III's optical viewfinder to compose your shot and control focus for the shot, you'll experience a true revolution in focus performance. A dedicated CMOS image sensor is available exclusively for autofocus, improving accuracy and precision thanks to significantly more focus points in the viewfinder. Fast AF processing is handled by the dedicated DIGIC 8 processor. Its only job is to take care of AF when the optical viewfinder is in use.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III has 191 AF points, 155 of which are cross-type sensors designed for extra sensitivity that is perfect for ensuring proper focus on dynamic subjects in sports and wildlife photography, even in low light. These AF points can be used individually for highly selective focusing. For example, in small groups and zones that can be arranged within the frame or to let the camera determine the best points for automatic focusing.

The behavior of the camera's continuous focusing can be optimally adjusted depending on the type of task. Four basic settings are available for this purpose, and there is now a new Auto Case setting that automatically provides the most appropriate behavior for the task at hand.

    Mirror System

To ensure that the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III can focus precisely even during fast continuous shooting, it features a completely newly developed mirror system. It depends on the camera's mirror to return to its resting positions as quickly as possible between shots, ensuring precise guidance of light to the AF sensor without mirror flip. This process repeats up to 16 times per second inside the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III an extraordinary feat of sophisticated precision engineering.

    Dual Pixel CMOS AF

When the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is used like a mirrorless camera, automatic focusing in Live View mode works in perfect harmony with the proven Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. This means that virtually every pixel on the camera's sensor serves simultaneously as an image pixel and as an AF pixel for phase detection.

The Dual Pixel CMOS AF is particularly fast when capturing still images, and moving objects are precisely tracked within the frame when shooting video - movies therefore appear visually much smoother, enabling professional pull-focus effects from one object to another.

Thanks to implementation of Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III offers AF pixels across the entire height of the sensor and over 90 percent of the width. Performance has been increased to a level that now lets you continuously focus faster and more accurately with continuous shooting up to 20 frames per second. The intelligent algorithms of Deep-learning AF are not only available when using the camera in viewfinder mode. They are also available to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF. You can therefore be sure that critical focus is always maintained on moving subjects, whether animal or human.

    Impressive images in low light

A DIGIC X processor and 20-megapixel sensor deliver incredible low-light performance up to ISO 102,400, expandable to 812,600, and the EOS-1D X Mark III delivers exceptional dynamic range.

Good light, low light or virtually no light the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III delivers excellent results in any condition. From the deep detail in dark areas of the frame to the precision of colors the shots just keep on impressing.

    Tailored 20.1-megapixel CMOS sensor

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III uses the latest generation of our advanced CMOS image sensor technology. The 20.1-megapixel full-frame sensor was developed specifically for this camera and offers optimum image quality, performance and operating speed.

Compared to its predecessor, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III offers increased dynamic range, better noise reduction at all ISO settings, and faster image data readout. Native ISO sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to ISO 812,900 and can be extended to an incredible ISO 50-812,600. Thus, the camera sets new standards in terms of low-light characteristics.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III also features a Gaussian low-pass filter (TPF) that suppresses moiré formation even more effectively than standard TPF designs, while delivering even sharper, more detailed images.

    DIGIC X Image Processor

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III uses a single DIGIC X processor that enables an entirely new level of performance-exactly what professionals who don't want to compromise need. The processor has also set a new standard in energy efficiency. As a result, battery range is double that of the EOS-1D X Mark II.

It also means you can shoot continuous shooting at up to 20fps in Live View mode, or 16fps with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III's optical viewfinder with full AF and AE tracking, and the buffer memory lasts for more than 1,000 shots in a sequence. But DIGIC X is more than just fast.

DIGIC X delivers less image noise at all ISO settings, more sharpness thanks to innovative clarity adjustment, and more dynamic range thanks to Auto Exposure Optimization and Tone Priority + Technology optimization.

DIGIC X is the brain for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III's Deep-learning AF and also controls the in-camera operations of the Digital Lens Optimizer. In this process, the image processor corrects optical errors that cannot be compensated for by lens design alone, such as aberrations and diffraction. Since the Digital Lens Optimizer does not affect the speed of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III in any way, it can now be used at top speeds for sports and wildlife photography.

    Various file formats

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III offers an enormous choice of file formats you can always use the format that is best suited for your task.

    CR3 RAW files

The CR3 RAW file format now finds its way into the EOS-1D series.

    • The recording can be done uncompressed with a higher dynamic range and 16.384 gradations per color channel, the image quality is improved. This is an ideal solution if the images have to be heavily processed during post-production.
    • But it also works compressed, so that the file size is reduced up to 40% and the image quality is hardly noticeably affected directly from the camera.

CR3 RAW files are supported by our Digital Photo Professional software, included free with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, as well as third-party software from Adobe or Apple, for example.

    JPEG and HEIF files

When you need to transfer files quickly, there's nothing better than the JPEG format at least until now. In fact, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III also allows you to capture HEIF (High efficiency Image Format) files, which are based on the HVEC video codec.

HEIF files offer better image quality at nearly the same file size compared to JPEG. This format also allows 10-bit color for higher dynamic range, so HDR PQ images can also be captured.

The compatibility of HEIF files is continuously expanding. However, this file format can also be converted to a standard JPEG in-camera.

    Extremely precise exposure metering

A special 400,000 pixel RGB+IR exposure metering sensor sets a completely new standard in terms of exposure precision. The 400,000 pixels are divided into 216 metering areas for this purpose. When working with the camera's optical viewfinder, the brightness in each zone is measured individually and the exposure is determined accordingly with the highest precision.

This metering sensor sees in color just like you do. It can also detect faces and other objects, helping the AF system to focus on them sharply as they move around the frame.

The sensor detects both infrared and visible light. This means that it can also detect objects that reflect infrared light strongly, which is then compensated for when the exposure is calculated. Infrared sensitivity also prevents autofocus errors, for example in shooting situations with different light sources, and optimizes precision in automatic white balance, Picture Style Auto, automatic exposure optimization and flicker detection.

    E-TTL Balance

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III's 400,000-pixel RGB+IR exposure metering sensor also enables even more precise flash compensation and features a new E-TTL option that allows photographers to control the balance between ambient and flash light.

    A compelling film camera

In terms of video capture, the EOS-1D X Mark III fits into virtually any workflow. It shoots 4K 60p or 5.5K RAW video, opening up entirely new possibilities.

The lighting ratio can be switched between ambient light priority (natural light is the predominant light source and the flash serves as a fill light) and flash priority (just the opposite). There is also a standard mode available where flash and ambient light have a roughly identical proportion similar to most other EOS cameras.

The LIGER can also record 5.5K RAW video internally to the CFexpress cards this gives filmmakers a unique image quality. More natural color gradations and dynamic range details are represented in bright and dark areas of the image within a range of 12 stops.

These 5,472 x 2,886 pixel CRM files can be processed with Digital Photo Pro software. It is included with the camera, and editing software from leading third-party vendors also supports this format. The LIGER can also simultaneously record 4K proxy files, which can be used to speed up post-production workflow.

Full HD recording with Dual Pixel AF and frame rates up to 120fps are also possible. This is ideal for slow motion effects at 1/4 speed.

    Dual Pixel CMOS AF

When shooting video, Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides steady focus on the subject, which can be selected by tapping the display (or on the display of a mobile device connected to the camera via the Canon Camera Connect app)* Faces and other subjects are detected and focus is tracked evenly on moving subjects. You can choose which eye the focus system should prioritize or leave it up to the camera, which will choose the eye closest to the camera.

    * Dual Pixel CMOS AF works in all modes except uncropped 4K or RAW at 60p/50p.

    Focus Peaking

When focusing manually, Focus Peaking indicates which areas of the image are in focus by outlining them in color. Depth of field is also indicated by highlighting the area of focus at the currently selected aperture.

    Image stabilization for video recordings

When shooting freehand video, Movie Digital IS offers very effective 5-axis image stabilization Camera shake is compensated for with it. An advanced mode also detects and corrects unwanted camera movements that occur when walking with the camera, for example, when walking next to the subject.

The results are simply great smooth, steady, professional video that rivals the movies from any dedicated high-end video camera.

    Extract high-resolution frames

You can extract 8.8 megapixel frames from 4K videos. To do this, you just need to play the corresponding movie on the camera's display in slow motion, and then you can extract the desired frame by pressing the shutter button. This is an interesting way to capture very fast moving subjects, shoot them at 4K 60p and then generate the desired photos from the video.

Creative filmmakers and visual storytellers can shoot full-frame 4K video at 60 frames per second with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. Footage is recorded internally with 10-bit HEVC/H.265 codec Canon Log or 12-bit RAW for expanded dynamic range and easy grading in post-production.

    4K recording and 5.5K RAW

Whatever your post-production workflow, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III offers the right shooting format with a whole new level of image quality and creativity.

4K/60p DCI video with oversampling are captured across the entire sensor width* the lens displays the identical image for video and stills. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III can shoot 17:9 DCI or 16:9 UHD and record the results in H.264 codec or as 10-bit H.265 codec with Canon Log. Such recordings are deliberately lower in contrast to make grading easier in post-production.
